Vaasa is best understood through two places joined by one history. Old Vaasa, founded in 1606, grew around trade and its harbour. After a great fire in 1852, the city moved about seven kilometres north, closer to the sea, and was rebuilt on a planned street grid. Broad streets and green boulevards still reflect that fire-conscious design. Statistics Finland counted 71,209 residents in the municipality on 31 December 2025. Vaasa is officially bilingual, with Finnish as the majority language and Swedish also official.
From an old market town to a new coastal centre
King Charles IX founded Vaasa at an established Ostrobothnian market and harbour site. Trade, especially tar, brought prosperity during the seventeenth century. The city later became a regional centre for administration and education; its court of appeal began in 1776. Fire destroyed most of the closely built town in August 1852. The city history repeats a local account about a market seller dropping a pipe, but the central documented facts are the destruction and the decision to rebuild closer to the sea. The new town was established in 1862; it carried the name Nikolainkaupunki for a time before returning to Vaasa after Finnish independence.
Old Vaasa remains a destination in its own right. The ruins of St Mary’s Church, the Wasastjerna House and the site of Korsholm Castle reveal a much longer regional story. The house, built in 1782, now contains the Museum of Old Vaasa. The nearby church ruins make the vanished old centre tangible, while the museum presents the city before the fire. This visit gives the catastrophe context without turning it into a romantic legend.
Museums and a coastline still in motion
Vaasa’s museums span regional history, nature and contemporary culture. The Ostrobothnian Museum pairs a city-history display with Terranova, a natural-history exhibition about the Kvarken landscape and the Ice Age. Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art hosts changing exhibitions; Tikanoja Art Museum presents art collections and cultural themes. One ticket may cover several museums on the same day, but opening times and displays change, so check the current museum calendar.
Beyond the centre is the Kvarken Archipelago, Finland’s only natural World Heritage property, inscribed with Sweden’s High Coast in 2006. The landscape records post-glacial land uplift: new islands appear, bays turn into lagoons and the coast continues to change. Replot Bridge leads toward Björkö and Svedjehamn, where trails and the Saltkaret observation tower give visitors a view across moraine ridges and sea. Boating, kayaking and summer excursions offer other ways to explore. A heritage bus and cruises operate seasonally; outside those periods a car or boat may be needed. Follow marked routes and check conditions before heading offshore.
Energy, ferries and getting around
Vaasa is also an industrial and university city. The EnergyVaasa cluster includes more than 180 energy-technology companies and supports over 11,000 regional jobs, according to the city and its partners. Its work ranges from electric grids and energy efficiency to marine power and sustainable generation. The port handles cargo and passengers, and local technical education and research help support the cluster.
Vaasa station has direct InterCity and Pendolino services to Helsinki. Wasaline connects Vaasa with Umeå in Sweden throughout the year. Lifti, the regional bus network shared with neighboring Mustasaari, includes a service coordinated with the ferry as well as local routes and service buses. The airport, station and harbour are close enough to make rail, air and sea useful options for a short visit. Check VR, Wasaline and Lifti for the date you need, because connections and seasonal schedules change. In town, combine the market square, civic centre and a museum; reserve another day for Old Vaasa or the Kvarken coast.
