Fervaques is a former village commune in the Pays d’Auge, in Calvados, Normandy. Its character is easiest to read along the Touques valley: a compact historic centre, a church-side starting point for walks, and the château estate known as Le Kinnor at the edge of the village. Since 1 January 2016 Fervaques has been a delegated commune within Livarot-Pays-d’Auge. INSEE’s last separate municipal population for the old commune was 670 in the 2013 reference census. This is a dated figure for the former boundary, not a current count for the larger new commune.
The principal landmark is the Domaine de Fervaques, also called Château Le Kinnor. The Ministry of Culture records a château built from 1597 to 1602 by François Gabriel for Guillaume de Hautemer, replacing an older manor of which the dovecote is the surviving remnant. Nineteenth-century changes added a kitchen garden and apple trees and modernised interiors. The estate was acquired by Delphine de Custine early in that century; Chateaubriand stayed there. A partial historic-monument classification dated 2 May 1995 protects the château, postern, dovecote remains, bridge over the Touques, park, moats and waterworks. The grounds cross the historic Fervaques and Cheffreville-Tonnencourt boundaries.
Local memory adds stories to that documented sequence. The Le Kinnor association’s history page recounts a visit by Henri IV in 1590 and describes Chateaubriand’s literary circle around Delphine de Custine. These are accounts preserved by the estate association, while the Ministry catalogue is the reference for the building date and legal protection. The association’s April 2026 newsletter also repeats a claim about a prehistoric burial site elsewhere in the area; that is not evidence for Fervaques itself. Tourism material calls the Croupte’s waters miraculous, a traditional description rather than a verified healing claim.
Two signed walks make the village a useful base for exploring the valley. The easy “Sur les pas d’Eugène Boudin” loop covers 4 kilometres in about an hour, starting in Fervaques and following places associated with the painter’s visits to friends Eugène and Stéphanie Jacquette, where he stayed most often between 1869 and 1897. For a longer outing, Normandie Tourisme lists a 14-kilometre yellow-marked circuit starting at the church. It follows the Touques-side landscape and notes where the Croupte joins the river; the route carries the Qualité Calvados label. Check current marking, ground conditions, access and local notices before walking.
Fervaques’ documented present-day activity includes the château association’s heritage, cultural events and adapted holiday stays. The wider rural Pays d’Auge setting is also part of the visitor experience, but current employment data published after the 2016 merger apply to Livarot-Pays-d’Auge as a whole and should not be presented as village-only economic statistics. The historic mairie remains a practical point of contact: the municipal page lists 172 route de Saint-Martin-de-la-Lieue and Monday and Friday public hours, with a delegated mayor. Call ahead to confirm office hours, château access, event dates and transport connections; for everyday services, check Livarot or Lisieux before travelling.
