Combrit is a commune in Finistère's Pays Bigouden Sud, where farmland, woodland and the Odet estuary meet. Sainte-Marine is its harbour quarter on the river's right bank, looking across to Bénodet; it is part of the commune, not a separate town. INSEE's 2023 reference population is 4,265 municipal residents for the entire commune, published in December 2025. The coastline, ferry landing and quieter inland lanes create distinct experiences within that same administrative area. Visitors can move from village services to the port and the wooded edge of the estuary, but should check seasonal transport and site opening before planning a packed itinerary.
Parish, settlement and an older economy
The municipal planning report says archaeological traces attributed to the Gallo-Roman period have been found around Kérobistin and the Pointe de Sainte-Marine. It records the parish of Combrit from the 13th century and explains that Lambourg and Île-Tudy were once dependent trèves, separated from the parish during and after the Revolution. These are statements in a municipal planning document, not a substitute for an excavation catalogue. The report also describes a significant economic shift in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: maërl brought from the Glénan was used to improve soils, while local crops such as grain, potatoes, peas and beans supplied regional canneries. The Quimper–Pont-l'Abbé railway, inaugurated in 1884, made freight movement easier. That agricultural and transport story helps explain how a coastal commune was connected to markets beyond its harbours.
Sainte-Marine's maritime landmarks
The pink Abri du Marin was built in 1910 by Jacques de Thézac to welcome fishing crews. Its purpose went beyond shelter: the official visitor guide describes a meeting and rest space, and today the restored building presents photographs, objects and changing maritime exhibitions. It entered the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in 2007. The Sainte-Marine lighthouse followed in 1885; the guide records its electrification in 1943 and damage by German troops in August 1944. A coastal guardhouse and a fort from 1862 add layers of defence to the point. The chapel dedicated to Sant-Voran preserves older statuary and maritime ex-votos. Dates and access vary by building, so check the municipal or tourism office's current notices rather than assuming every interior is open.
Wood, wetland and the Odet crossing
The Roscouré wood, owned by the Conservatoire du littoral since 1983 according to the tourism office, has marked walking paths along the Odet. Nearby, the Polder de Combrit is a sensitive wetland whose dunes help shield low-lying land from the sea. The official Polder circuit covers 11.6 kilometres, starts at the Kerscuntec observatory car park and uses yellow PR and white-red GR34 markings; the route provider says signs on the ground take precedence over a printed map. The small ferry links Sainte-Marine with Bénodet for pedestrians and bicycles; the tourism page usually lists seasonal service from April to September. That makes a car-free coastal outing possible when the boat is operating, but departure times and service dates can change. Check the operator, weather, tide and trail notices before setting off.
Work and everyday services
INSEE's 2023 workplace figures count 847 jobs in Combrit. Commerce, transport and varied services account for 45.6 percent, with public administration, education, health and social action at 35.5 percent; a separate 2024 register counts 399 active non-agricultural market-producing legal units. Those categories show a service-rich local economy, but they are statistical snapshots rather than a live business directory. The municipality maintains public facilities including schools, a media library and sports spaces, and the official visitor pages publish market and seasonal transport information. Sainte-Marine's market is listed for Wednesday mornings and the Combrit market for Friday afternoon, but dates and hours can shift. Confirm ferry, bus, market and exhibition arrangements with the operator or municipality before travelling.
