Ascoli Piceno: travertine, medieval towers and Piazza del Popolo
Ascoli Piceno is the capital of the province of the same name in the Marche and is located at the confluence of the Tronto with the Castellano, 28 kilometers from the Adriatic. The historic centre, built almost entirely in travertine, revolves around the Renaissance Piazza del Popolo.
History and identity
In the Middle Ages Ascoli was characterized by around two hundred noble towers, of which it still retains several examples: hence the nickname of the City of a Hundred Towers. In 2026 the Ventidio Basso Theater entered the UNESCO world heritage list as a component of the serial site dedicated to Italian-style theaters in condominiums from the 18th and 19th centuries in central Italy.

Piazza del Popolo, the travertine fabric and the surviving towers define the route in the historic center. The Ventidio Basso Theater adds the history of the show and the new UNESCO site. The Ascension mountain, the San Marco hill and the Fiori mountain surround the urban basin, between the Sibillini and Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga national parks.
