Vernazza: historic port and terraces of the Cinque Terre
Vernazza occupies the mouth of a short stream along the Ligurian coast. Houses, alleyways, port and terraced slopes are concentrated in a steep space. The town is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and the UNESCO cultural landscape with Portovenere and the islands.
History and identity
The village had close relations with Genoa and developed defensive structures against incursions from the sea. The tower of the Doria castle dominates the port; Santa Margherita d'Antiochia overlooks the water directly. Floods and landslides, particularly in 2011, remind us of the vulnerability of the area.
What to see
The port square is the center, while alleys and stairs lead up to the castle and sanctuaries. The terraces bear witness to centuries of agricultural work. The paths towards Monterosso and Corniglia require tickets when applicable, suitable footwear and control of openings; they are not simple panoramic walks.
Understand the place
The train is the most practical means of transport and cars do not enter the nucleus. Piers and rocks can become dangerous in rough seas. Crowding and heat increase in summer. Consult the park for trails and warnings, bring water and do not go beyond closures.
