La Spezia: port, arsenal and landscape of the Gulf of Poets
La Spezia is the second largest Ligurian municipality by population and is located at the far east of the region, in the center of a deep natural gulf. The inlet, known as the Gulf of Poets due to the historical presence of authors such as Shelley, Byron and Lawrence, is surrounded by a continuous chain of hills.
History and identity
The urban fabric preserves an ancient medieval center next to the orthogonal road network of the nineteenth century. The construction of the military Arsenal profoundly transformed the city and pushed its expansion towards the hills; in the 1920s a part of the Capuchin hill was also excavated to allow the center to develop towards the east.
What to see
The Gulf of Poets explains the port position and the growth of the city, protected by a breakwater approximately 2,210 meters long. The heights of Verrugoli, Parodi, Santa Croce and Viseggi surround the town. A small part of the municipal territory, near the village of Tramonti, falls within the Cinque Terre National Park.
