Troyes: medieval and Renaissance heritage in Champagne
Prefecture of Aube, Troyes is located in the historical and cultural region of Champagne and is crossed by the Seine. Labeled a City of Art and History, it retains an urban ensemble which bears witness to its medieval and Renaissance past.
History and identity
The city bears the heritage of the Tricassians, then of Augustobona in the Roman era. From the 11th century, the fairs organized by the counts of Champagne strengthened its economic influence by attracting merchants from all over Europe. A large part of the city was rebuilt after the fire of 1524.

Troyes has 42 buildings protected as historic monuments, including ten churches and a Gothic cathedral. The center is also distinguished by a high concentration of 16th century half-timbered houses and by the diversity of its stained glass windows.
