Pizieux is a very small commune in the Saosnois, the countryside north of Le Mans and close to Mamers. INSEE counted 75 municipal residents across the entire commune for reference year 2023; that figure became legally effective on 1 January 2026. One person was counted separately, making the total population 76. The scale shapes a visit: this is a quiet rural community rather than a village built around a busy tourist quarter. Its clearest public landmark is the church of Saint-Rémy, where the architecture gathers several centuries of parish life in one compact building.

The church appears in the cartulary of Saint-Vincent Abbey at Le Mans, while Sarthe Tourisme dates the standing building to the 12th century. That documented chronology is clearer than any foundation legend, for which the heritage sources consulted offer no evidence. The church has one nave and a straight east end once lit by three grouped windows. Chapels were added north and south in the 15th and 16th centuries; alterations continued into the 19th. Inside are a stone Pietà dated to the 16th or 17th century, a 16th-century Christ and Saint Anne, and a stone equestrian Saint Martin from the 15th century. Eight windows add a contemporary note: artist Michel Madore designed them, with glass work by Michel Ducreux.

The neighbouring former presbytery adds a distinct civic layer to the village centre. The Ministry of Culture dates it to the 17th century and records its doorway as protected in 1926. The church itself has received practical care in recent decades: the Sauvegarde de l’Art Français documents grants in 2016 and 2018 for façade rendering, the sacristy, damp-affected lower walls and roof work. The pairing of medieval church, later chapels, modern stained glass and restored masonry makes Pizieux’s heritage unusually readable at close range.

Work and community life remain small in scale. INSEE counted 16 jobs located in the commune in 2022; that workplace figure is not a census of every farm or self-employed activity. A notable recent example of local organization was the cantonal agricultural fair held here in August 2025. Its association brought together livestock, artisans and a musical society, and local recordings preserve both a full event film and advance coverage. The fair is a dated event, not a promise of an annual programme. For everyday administration, the mairie is at 2 rue du Marronnier and currently lists Monday opening from 15:00 to 17:00; check before travelling. Mamers is the surrounding service centre and the start of a regional excursion: Sarthe Tourisme’s medium 64-kilometre cycling circuit from Mamers to Saint-Aignan passes through Pizieux and neighbouring villages. Confirm route conditions, schedules and services before setting out.
