Montholier is best understood through three documented strands of Jura life: a harvest celebration, a former cooperative dairy, and a protected wet meadow. The municipal population published by INSEE for 2023 is 365 people for the whole commune, not just its built-up centre; the recorded density is 45.7 inhabitants per square kilometre. INSEE and the national local-authority register place Montholier in the Jura, within Bourgogne–Franche-Comté, and in the Poligny living area and area of attraction.

A cooperative’s long record

The regional heritage inventory dates the village fruitière, or cooperative cheese dairy, to about 1850. It records production rising from 10,000 kilograms of cheese in 1856 to 36,000 in 1881. A newly formed cooperative then commissioned a model dairy chalet: architect Charles-Alfred Schacre’s design was built in 1898–99 for an intended annual output of 45,000 kilograms of Comté. Heating was installed in 1922. In 1924, 65 members owned 250 cows and the dairy handled an average 1,300 litres of milk a day. By the middle of the twentieth century, annual milk intake had reached 650,000 litres. The dairy closed in 1975 or 1976; the commune bought the building around 1986 and converted it into a village function hall. This is a documented account of past cooperative production, not evidence of a cheese shop, working dairy, or public museum today; access arrangements were not confirmed.

Biou, church and living tradition

The local tourism office describes a glazed-tile bell tower and church furnishings that are all listed as heritage. It says parishioners still celebrate the Biou for Saint Michael. The office’s 2026 calendar gave 4 October as that year’s date, which has passed; check with the organisers before planning for another edition. The same official listing calls the Biou an old, religiously rooted harvest festival and says its first traces date to the seventeenth century. That is the documented scope of the tradition; it does not establish the details of every modern programme.

Work, nature and practical planning

INSEE counted 46 jobs located in the commune in 2023. At the end of 2024 it counted 12 employer establishments: one each in agriculture and industry, three in construction, four in commerce, transport and services, and three in public administration, education, health and social work. These are establishments with employees under INSEE’s stated measure, not a complete inventory of farms or self-employed work. A regional biodiversity atlas identifies the Prairie humide de la Chau at Montholier as a wet meadow managed by the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Franche-Comté and protected by a prefectural biotope order. Its visitor access was not verified, so treat it as a conservation site, not an assumed walking trail.

The mairie is listed at 360 route de Genève, telephone +33 3 84 37 56 70; call to confirm current opening hours. Cœur du Jura promotes more than 600 kilometres of marked regional hiking paths, but its consulted catalogue lists starts in Arbois, Poligny and Salins-les-Bains, not a named Montholier circuit. It does list routes in Poligny, including a 4.1-kilometre, one-hour walk. Check the official map and current conditions before setting out.
