Modena: Romanesque cathedral, squares and Emilian culture
Modena is an Emilian city with an ordered center around Piazza Grande. The cathedral, the Ghirlandina tower and the square are UNESCO heritage sites. The gastronomic and automotive traditions complete a much older urban history.
History and identity
The cathedral was begun in 1099 based on a design by Lanfranco and decorated by Wiligelmo. The Ghirlandina carried out religious and civic functions. Later the Este family moved the court to Modena, leaving the large ducal palace which is now home to the Military Academy.
What to see
Piazza Grande allows you to observe the cathedral, bell tower and town hall. The Civic Museum and the Duomo museums add context. The collections related to Ferrari and Maserati are in different locations, some outside the centre, and require independent tickets.

The climb to Ghirlandina depends on times and reservations. Markets and religious functions change the use of squares. Traditional balsamic vinegar is produced according to precise rules: visits to vinegar factories must be agreed upon and do not replace the urban visit.
