A small Tarn commune shaped by its valley

Marnaves is a very small commune in the Tarn department of Occitanie, part of the Communauté de communes du Cordais et du Causse. It sits in the Cérou valley, where the local 2021 bulletin describes the village on a modest rise set back from the river. INSEE’s reference population for the whole commune in 2023 is 76 municipal residents; two people are counted apart, making 78 in total. These figures took effect on 1 January 2026 and do not refer only to the compact settlement. The terrain gives Marnaves its visitor character: a historic village, a washhouse and a high, privately owned castle silhouette, with marked walking and cycling routes through the surrounding slopes. The dramatic flying site belongs to qualified or supervised pilots, not casual sightseeing.

What the local record can and cannot date

The hilltop Château de Roquereine, also called La Prune, dominates many local descriptions. A 2021 bulletin on Cordes and neighboring communities reports that archival references to the castle reach 1232; that wording does not establish that it was built or donated in that year. The same bulletin says the property was rescued from ruin in the 1960s and, as reported then, was privately owned and opened only occasionally for private events. It should therefore be admired from public routes, not treated as a walk-in attraction. In the village, the bulletin names the parish church of Saint-Médard and dates the rebuilt bell tower to 1884 after lightning damage. It dates the washhouse at the village edge to 1894. These specific records offer firmer bearings than an embellished castle legend.

Work, landscape and services

The local bulletin recalls sheep farming, dry-stone parcel walls and cazelles, crafts serving the Cordes and Grésigne area, and vineyard terraces that remained in use until the Second World War. These are historical livelihoods rather than a claim about today’s economy. INSEE counted three jobs located in Marnaves in 2023 and one employer establishment at the end of 2024; the counts are tiny and have different scopes, so they cannot describe every current activity. Its 2023 housing table records 35 households and 71 homes, with 43.9% classed as secondary or occasional homes. A 2020 intercommunal planning diagnosis recorded a bakery and two itinerant shops, but those dated listings should be checked before relying on them. The mairie’s current public directory gives Tuesday hours, 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00. The government directory lists France Services at Les Cabannes, 5.4 km away, and Vaour, 7.4 km away; verify opening times and access.

Choose a route that matches your experience

Tarn Tourisme describes the Grésinhóla walking loop as 19 km and about five and a half hours, and identifies Marnaves with a Way of St James route. For cycling, the officially listed Circuit VTT n°30 Marnaves rouge is a separate, shorter but demanding 5.5 km loop with 273 m of ascent and descent. Its guide starts at the parking opposite the cemetery, climbs the red-earth tracks, passes La Moulette and returns by the GR de Pays Penne-Cordes; it warns that the descent is technical. Cordes-sur-Ciel is listed 8.5 km away to the northwest by the D600. Marnaves also has the Roc de Bartou paragliding site. The tourism listing calls it complex and says it is for pilots holding at least a pilot certificate or flying under a federal instructor’s supervision; the local club also warns about restricted airspace, wind and sensitive landing areas. Check the current route files, marking, weather, land access and airspace rules before setting out.
