Le Thuel is a small commune in the Aisne department of Hauts-de-France, within the Portes de la Thiérache community. The latest published census gives the commune a municipal population of 158 in 2023, with a density of 22.4 residents per square kilometre. That scale shapes the visit: expect a quiet village pause centred on its parish church and use the wider Thiérache map to plan walks or heritage stops elsewhere in the area.

A separate commune since 1883

The local intercommunal history says Le Thuel began as a section of Noircourt with around thirty houses and became a separate commune in 1883. The same French-language account records two competing local explanations for the name: one links it to Tilia, the linden tree, while another associates it with tuerie after wartime damage. It also notes that some people pronounce the name Le Thué. These are reported as local interpretations rather than settled linguistic conclusions, so the village’s documented municipal history is firmer ground than any single origin story.

The local page describes the parish church as built entirely of brick, with a semicircular sanctuary, choir, nave, porch and two side aisles. The regional heritage inventory identifies it as Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and photographed the building in 2025. Its interior objects reward closer attention when the church is open: the Ministry of Culture lists a nineteenth-century wooden altar from the north aisle, painted to imitate marble and gilding, as a protected historic object since 1980. That record applies to the altar itself, not automatically to the entire church. Interior access and service times are not guaranteed; check locally before planning around them.

Everyday life and the wider area

Le Thuel remains a very small working commune rather than a commercial visitor centre. Insee counted 28 jobs located within the commune in 2023 and seven employer establishments at the end of 2024. Of those establishments, 28.6 per cent were in agriculture, forestry or fishing; 42.9 per cent in commerce, transport or services; and 28.6 per cent in public administration, education, health or social work. Every listed employer establishment had fewer than ten employees, so the percentages describe a handful of workplaces, not the jobs held by all residents.

BANATIC places Le Thuel in the Montcornet living area and the Portes de la Thiérache intercommunal community. The mairie is at 23 Grande Rue; the official Service-Public directory currently lists public hours on Monday and Thursday from 4 to 6 pm. Call ahead, since a small town hall may change its schedule or receive visitors by appointment. For practical services beyond the village, check current listings in Montcornet rather than assuming that shops, fuel or food are available at Le Thuel.

Walks, access and useful planning

The intercommunal tourist map shows Le Thuel within the wider destination and lists marked outings that start in other villages. Examples include the 1.1-kilometre, roughly 30-minute micro-walk “Découverte d’un Bourg de Thiérache” in Montcornet and the 1.4-kilometre, roughly one-hour “Chemin de la brique et du torchis” in Parfondeval. These are regional options, not trails beginning at Le Thuel; confirm that signs and paths remain open before setting out. The map does not identify a named loop from the commune itself. For driving, the Aisne Department maintains Inforoutes02 and links to school and intercity transport information. Check live road conditions and current transport calendars before travelling, especially because rural services can be limited or school-day specific.
