Grimentz stands high in Switzerland’s Val d’Anniviers, where darkened larch houses, flowered balconies and steep mountain slopes make the village feel closely connected to the seasons. It is one settlement within the much larger commune of Anniviers, created in 2009 from six former communes. A 2019 planning document counted 498 residents in Grimentz itself; the municipality reported 2,788 residents across Anniviers on 31 December 2025. The village is a lived-in place as well as a gateway to ski lifts, hiking routes and the Moiry valley.

A communal house and the glacier wine

The Maison bourgeoisiale, the local burgher house, is documented as standing by 1550. Its heritage inventory describes a building that served as a cellar for wine belonging to the bourgeois community, while upper rooms were used for assemblies and sometimes shelter. This makes it more than a photogenic timber façade: it reflects shared institutions and the management of mountain resources. The cellar holds larch barrels associated with Vin des Glaciers, a white wine tradition linked by Valais tourism to the region’s former transhumant farmers. Stories about the wine belong to local culture, but should not be turned into an unverified origin legend. The firm points are the continuing practice and the historic communal building.

Walking the village and high valley

In the old lanes, look for larch construction, raised granaries and balconies dressed with geraniums in season. A working water mill, a historic trail, an animal trail for families and a route about local legends offer different ways to read the settlement. Guided visits may include a tasting in the sixteenth-century house; confirm availability ahead. Above the village, the region offers hiking and mountain-bike routes, while winter brings skiing, snowshoeing and sledging. Valais tourism lists the Tour of Lake Moiry at 13.36 kilometres and about four hours thirty-five minutes, moderate difficulty. The Zinal–Grimentz stage is 14.36 kilometres and about four hours thirty; it crosses high ground near Sorebois and the Moiry dam, so check weather, trail conditions and lift operation.

Reaching Grimentz and planning a stay

By public transport, take the train to Sierre and connect to PostBus 451 for Vissoie; route 452 continues from Vissoie to Grimentz, including the village and cable-car stop. Check current connections and seasonal services before departure. The road also climbs from Sierre through the valley, and the municipality publishes notices about works and closures. Grimentz has visitor accommodation, restaurants, local services and a tourist contact, while the cable car opens access to higher terrain. The Moiry dam and glacier are a further excursion via the village; the access road closes in winter. Combine time in the lanes with one mountain outing suited to the season instead of assuming every trail or lift is open.
