Getaria: maritime history, vineyards and Mount San Antón
Getaria is a coastal town in Gipuzkoa located between the cornice and the tombolo that leads to Mount San Antón. That promontory, known as the Ratón de Getaria due to its silhouette, forms with the port and the town center one of the most recognizable images of the Guipuzcoan coast.
History and identity
The oldest evidence includes a coin from pre-imperial Roman times. The town was founded between 1180 and 1194 by Sancho VI of Navarra, and Alfonso VIII later confirmed its jurisdiction. Getaria is also the birthplace of the sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano and the fashion creator Cristóbal Balenciaga.
