Bolsena: Lake and History of a Place
Bolsena is an Italian municipality located on the northern shore of Lake Bolsena, formed 300,000 years ago due to the collapse of Volsini volcanoes. The city has a mild climate thanks to the proximity of the lake and has a relaxed atmosphere.
History and identity
After the destruction of the Etruscan Velzna, today's Orvieto, the Romans founded in 264 BC. Volsinii Novi, from which Bolsena derives. The position on the Via Cassia favored a phase of economic prosperity. In June 1944 the territory was the scene of a battle between German and British forces, in which 597 Commonwealth men died.

The lake occupies a caldera formed over 300,000 years ago following the collapse of volcanoes in the Volsini Mountains. Bolsena is located on the northern shore, between the water and the hills that formed the edge of the ancient volcanic cone. The history of Volsinii Novi and the route of the Via Cassia add an archaeological dimension to the lake landscape.
