Schongau, Bavaria: a walk through the walled old town

A walking tour introduces Schongau's historic centre above the Lech and its preserved medieval walls.

Schongau's old town occupies a high bend above the Lech, and a walking tour is a natural way to take in its compact scale. The surviving wall, gates and towers form a continuous outline around streets that still serve as the centre of a working regional town. The street-level perspective helps visitors notice that this historic setting is lived in, with shops and services alongside landmarks.

A good visit can follow the wall before pausing at the market square and the late-Gothic Ballenhaus. The town museum, housed in the former St Erasmus church, adds context through objects from local worship and trade. Schongau also opens onto the Pfaffenwinkel and the Lech valley, but those destinations are beyond a short city walk. Check the museum's opening hours and current regional train and bus timetables before you travel.
