Thimory is a small commune in the Gâtinais of the Loiret, where the Limetin and its minor tributaries thread through a landscape of woods, fields and orchards. The official 2023 reference count is 684 residents for the entire commune, not just the built-up village; INSEE gives a density of 55.3 inhabitants per square kilometre. The place suits a slow visit: a church-centred village, a rural walking circuit and short excursions across the wider forest-and-canal country.
Water, vines and the village’s built landmarks
Tourisme Loiret describes Thimory as a wooded commune crossed by the Limetin and other small streams. Its account says vineyards once formed part of local life and orchards have since taken their place; the Cour des Pressoirs is presented as a reminder of that wine-growing past. This is a useful way to read the surrounding lanes: the agricultural landscape changed, while the place names and old structures keep traces of earlier work.
In the centre, the tourism office dates Saint-Germain church to the twelfth century and its porch bell tower to the early twentieth. The same guide suggests that an earlier building may have been destroyed during ninth-century Viking incursions, but frames this as probability rather than established fact; it should not be repeated as certain history. The nearby Ouchamps manor offers another historical layer: the guide identifies a late-nineteenth-century residence on a square motte and links its name to the Douchamp family, holders of the local fief in the seventeenth century. No public interior access is listed, so treat it as a landscape reference rather than a guaranteed visit.
The village centre itself has recently been adapted for safer walking. A Loiret departmental communiqué records safety works on the RD961 and two central junctions, broader pedestrian links and a raised crossing, completed between December 2024 and March 2025 and inaugurated on 6 September 2025.
A small local economy and practical services
INSEE counted 49 jobs located in the whole commune in 2023. Its Flores register lists 11 employer establishments active in the last week of December 2024. The counts are small and describe different measures; they suggest a rural economy spread among agriculture and forestry, building trades, commerce and services, and public or community services, rather than a single visitor-facing centre.
The municipal pages list a school and after-school care, a postal counter at the Relais de Thimory, a garage, and mobile food vendors: a travelling bistro is listed for Tuesday evenings and a pizza van for Fridays. Those are local listings, not a promise that a service will be operating when you arrive. The town’s current homepage also reports that the BMX ground is closed for safety reasons; check for a later reopening notice before planning an activity around it.
Walk from the church, then range farther
The most concrete visitor route is the PR du Sel et des Étangs E7, proposed by the Office de tourisme Gâtinais Sud. Its page, updated 6 July 2026, gives 9.3 kilometres and about two and a half hours, starting at the church square/2 rue de Sully. The described loop crosses a small bridge over the Limetin, continues through paths toward Oussoy-en-Gâtinais and La Cour-Marigny, skirts ponds, then returns to Thimory. The listing calls it easy but also warns that difficulty information is incomplete. Download the current GPX, check the ground and weather, and confirm that paths remain open before setting out; do not assume the listed time is a timetable.
For a longer day, the official Loiret guide points visitors toward Montargis, 18 kilometres away, and the forest d’Orléans to the south. Nearby Lorris has the departmental Resistance and Deportation museum; its operator sets specific visiting conditions, so check its current calendar before travelling. Regional pages describe access by A77 and D2060 and REMI buses from Montargis or Dampierre-en-Burly; rail passengers can connect at Montargis, but schedules change. Check transport, shop hours and church access directly before you go.
