Solignat sits in the Lembron countryside south of Issoire, with the Puy d’Ysson rising above the commune. The latest Insee figures count 510 municipal residents across the whole commune in 2023, not just in the village centre; BANATIC lists 519 as the total population for the same census vintage when people counted separately are included. Insee gives a density of 46.1 residents per square kilometre. The commune belongs to Agglo Pays d’Issoire and the Issoire living area, a useful practical frame for services beyond the village. Its main visitor draw is not a dense monument circuit but the meeting of a rural settlement, an extinct basalt volcano and land still managed through grazing.
A basalt summit with living grassland
The Puy d’Ysson reaches 856 metres. The local tourism office describes a view toward the Sancy range, the Pays des Couzes and the Forez mountains, while the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels d’Auvergne calls the hill an extinct volcano of roughly six million years. Its protected slope covers 17.62 hectares and belongs to the Natura 2000 network. This is not simply a viewpoint: after grazing had declined, sheep were returned through cooperation between landowners, a breeder and the Conservatoire. The management protects a station of cross gentian and habitat for the rare Croisette blue butterfly. A playful comic-style interpretation circuit links the village’s history to the natural site, giving the walk a local context without asking visitors to treat ecological management as scenery alone.
There are two different official walking descriptions, and their numbers should not be confused. The Puy-de-Dôme department’s yellow marked PDIPR loop begins in Solignat and is listed at 8 kilometres, easy, around 2 hours 45 minutes, with 250 metres of ascent and a maximum altitude of 856 metres. Its route card provides a GPX and PDF, warns that weather can make paths inadvisable or impassable, and requires dogs to be kept on a lead because livestock are present. The Conservatoire separately describes a 7-kilometre, three-hour, medium-level round trip to discover the site; it also notes a walking approach from Vodable. Choose the route format you intend to follow and download that track, rather than combining the separate distance figures. The local tourism office confirms that Solignat is an access point, including a road approach to the summit; this does not guarantee that every path is suitable in winter or poor visibility.
Work and services in a small commune
Insee counted 27 jobs located in Solignat in 2023 and eight employer establishments at the end of 2024. Those establishments are a small statistical base: 37.5 percent were in agriculture, forestry or fishing, 25 percent in construction, 12.5 percent in commerce, transport or services, and 25 percent in public administration, education, health or social work. These figures describe registered employer establishments, not every resident’s work or commuting pattern. For administrative needs, the state directory lists the mairie at 31 place de la Mairie, telephone 04 73 71 44 90. Two official listings show slightly different closing times, so call before setting out instead of relying on a precise schedule. Saint-Germain-Lembron and Champeix are listed as nearby France Services locations for public-service support.
For a first visit, take the marked route from the village toward the summit and orientation table, then allow time to read the Puy’s natural and pastoral setting. Bring water, weather protection and suitable footwear; stay on marked paths, avoid disturbing wildlife and keep dogs on a lead near herds. Check the current GPX and local conditions before departure, especially in fog or winter.
