Potes: meeting of rivers and paths in Liébana
Potes is located in the center of the Cantabrian region of Liébana, where the Deva and Quiviesa rivers converge. Surrounded by mountains, the town has functioned as a market and road junction between the Lebanese valleys. Its bridges, towers and narrow streets are best understood in relation to that geographical position.
History and identity
The Infantado tower, a large late medieval construction, is the main testimony of lordly power and today houses cultural spaces. The Orejón de la Lama tower and the preserved mansions complete the reading of the nucleus. Much of Potes suffered destruction during the Civil War and was rebuilt afterwards, a fact necessary to interpret its current appearance.
What to see
The Solana and Sol neighborhoods bring together balconies, arcades and steps next to the water. Crossing the bridges allows you to see how the two rivers organize the population. Potes is also the starting point for Santo Toribio de Liébana and Fuente Dé, but both require independent routes and should not be confused with attractions within the urban area.
Understanding the place
The center can be explored on foot, although some streets are steep and the pavement is uneven. Market Mondays alter traffic and show a still alive regional function. In high season it is advisable to arrive early and consult buses, cable car and mountain access separately. The weather changes quickly in the Picos de Europa.
