Campo de Caso: the gateway to the Redes Natural Park in Asturias
In the green mountains of southern Asturias, where the river Nalon is still young, Campo de Caso is the capital of the Caso district. The whole municipality, together with neighbouring Sobrescobio, makes up the Redes Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve said to hold the greatest diversity of vertebrate wildlife in Asturias.
A landscape of wild nature
Beech and oak woods cover much of the territory, climbing to high pastures and peaks such as the Tiatordos. The Nalon, the longest river in Asturias, rises at the village of Tarna within the district, and walking trails thread the valleys and reservoirs of the park.
Casin cheese and village life
Caso is the home of Casin cheese, one of the oldest documented in Asturias, recorded as far back as the 13th century and made by a long, laborious process from the milk of the local casina cattle; it is strong, sharp and very rich. In the village of Campo de Caso itself, a medieval bridge over the Nalon, the 17th-century Suarez Ballesteros mansion and several houses built by returning emigrants are worth a look, and the cheese is celebrated at its own annual fair.
How to get there
The village lies about fifty-eight kilometres south-east of Oviedo, set at 577 metres in the upper Nalon valley near the border with the province of Leon.
