Les Pieux is a small service town in the western Cotentin, Manche, with its coastal hamlet of Sciotot facing the English Channel. INSEE’s 2022 census table records 3,266 residents for the commune, on the geography in force on 1 January 2025. The town’s character comes from that mix of working centre and open coast: shops and weekly market inland, then a long bay framed by headlands and the heather-covered heights of the Cotentin.
Sciotot’s sandy shore stretches for about four kilometres between Cap de Flamanville and Cap du Rozel. It is shaped by a pronounced tidal range, so the beach changes substantially between high and low water. The Cotentin visitor office lists summer lifeguard supervision from 11:00 to 19:00 in July and August, plus activities through the local Voile et Vent centre, including land sailing and wind sports. Check the current season’s safety notices, tide times, access and activity schedule before planning a swim or lesson.
Above the bay, Roche à Coucou rises to about 135 metres and gives a broad view across Sciotot and toward both caps. A former German observation post remains part of the site’s wartime landscape. The coastal GR 223, often called the customs officers’ path, follows this section of shore; the municipal tourism page links to local walking maps. A marked 10.7-kilometre, moderate circuit takes in the Roche à Coucou and the neighbouring Le Rozel coast. Its published route starts at Le Rozel’s town-hall parking area, takes about two and a half hours, and should be checked for current markings and safe access.
Les Pieux also has a documented everyday economy beyond the beach. The municipality describes agriculture, many shops and craftspeople, small and medium-sized businesses, and activity areas at Les Hauts Vents and Les Costils. A Friday morning market and the Rue Centrale business district serve residents and visitors; the town’s service directory includes food shops, cafés, health and practical services. The coastal economy adds seasonal tourism and water sports at Sciotot. The best way to understand the contrast is to pair a walk through the centre with time on the shore, rather than treating the town only as a beach resort.
Before travelling, check the town and Cotentin tourism sites for current bus connections, parking, beach supervision, tide information and opening times. The municipality notes public transport access to the town centre, while the trail and beach can have seasonal or weather-related restrictions.
