Hébécrevon is a village in the bocage of the Manche department, beside the Vire valley. Since 1 January 2016 it has been a delegated commune within Thèreval, formed with nearby La Chapelle-Enjuger. The last separate legal population for the former commune was 1,139 municipal residents at the 1 January 2013 reference date; the total was 1,171, including 32 people counted separately. These are dated figures for Hébécrevon’s former boundary, not a current population count for Thèreval.
The local landscape and public memory are marked by the summer of 1944. Thèreval’s municipal history records that Hébécrevon and La Chapelle-Enjuger were bombed during Operation Cobra on 24–26 July. It reports three civilian deaths in Hébécrevon and describes residents returning to damaged homes and farms. Reconstruction began with a cornerstone laid in 1947. Saint-Martin Church, rebuilt after the earlier church was destroyed, is a prominent landmark of that period. The Ministry of Culture describes construction campaigns in 1952 and 1962 by Chapaud, Haguenauer and Simon: a basilican plan, independent bell tower, elliptical concrete vault and walls combining concrete with local pudding stone. It received the Architecture contemporaine remarquable label in 2004.
Another historic building is the privately owned Château de la Roque, a 16th-century property whose façades and roofs were listed in 1946. Its presence on the walking route offers a glimpse of the area’s older estate landscape, but it is not a general-access attraction. Respect private boundaries and contact the owners directly if you are seeking accommodation.
For a slower visit, follow the Vire and its towpath. Municipal and Saint-Lô Agglo information describes an easy 8.05-kilometre loop of about two hours, starting at Place des Tilleuls and marked in blue. The Vire was canalized in the mid-19th century, removed from the list of navigable waterways in 1957, and is now used for walking, cycling, riding, fishing and kayaking. The route sheet says its details are indicative, so check current signs, ground conditions and access before setting out.
Thèreval’s municipal directory shows the practical scale of village life: a general grocer, pharmacy, bar-tabac-presse with postal relay, garage, food producers and local trades are listed in Hébécrevon. The municipal council page identifies a delegated mayor and the town hall at 13 rue Saint-Martin. Businesses and opening times change, so confirm them directly; also check transport links and seasonal access before travelling.
