A small commune in the Comminges
Ganties is a rural commune in Haute-Garonne, in the Comminges and the Cagire Garonne Salat intercommunal area. Its identity is unusually easy to misread if the old spa name is taken literally: the celebrated thermal complex called Ganties-les-Bains spread across Ganties and neighboring Couret, and much of its surviving story belongs to both places. INSEE’s 2023 reference count is 302 municipal residents for the whole commune, plus six people counted apart, making a total of 308. The municipal figure is not a count of the central settlement alone; the reference population took effect on 1 January 2026. INSEE gives a density of 25.1 residents per square kilometre and 144 households in 2023, useful context for a visit built around local history and the surrounding landscape rather than a large resort centre.
From two bath houses to Ganties-les-Bains
The regional heritage inventory separates the documented chronology from later recollection. The first bath establishment was at Ganties: the owner, Sieur Chaton, received permission to exploit the spring in 1829, and the building was reconstructed in 1831. A second establishment was founded a few dozen metres away in Couret in 1836. The two businesses were joined in 1900 under the name Ganties-les-Bains. The inventory records a peak of 1,100 curists in 1911. The First World War ended thermal-water operations; oral accounts describe a post-war restart, but the inventory says activity appears to have ceased again during the 1920s. An attempted revival in the 1950s seems to have remained unfinished. Today’s tourism route listing says the former thermal buildings are private property and can be viewed only from outside, so the historic site is not an advertised interior visit.
Heritage, landscape and local work
The Ministry of Culture identifies the underground galleries and caves known as the Souterrain de Houantaou across Ganties and Montespan. Its record assigns the principal period to the Upper Paleolithic and records classification as a historic monument on 18 February 1924. That protection record is not a visitor-access notice; do not enter caves or private land without explicit permission. The intercommunal community’s Ganties listing identifies the church of Saint-Sébastien and dates its wall belfry to the fifteenth or sixteenth century. For the present economy, INSEE counts 33 jobs located in the commune in 2023 and seven employer establishments at the end of 2024. The latter are a very small statistical base: two were classed in agriculture, forestry and fishing, three in commerce, transport and services, and two in public services, education, health or social work. A current regional tourism listing describes the Ferme du Guiros, founded in 2018 and taken over by a new farmer in 2025, with seasonal vegetables, eggs and free-range poultry. It lists farm sales on Mondays and Fridays from 16:30 to 19:30 except public holidays; check before travelling.
A route that starts in the village
The official blue cross-country mountain-bike circuit “Ombres et lumières autour de Ganties” starts here. The tourism listing gives 15.7 kilometres, 258 metres of ascent, an easy rating and about 1 hour 45 minutes. Its description alternates woodland with more open agricultural spaces and notes views toward the Aspet-canton mountains. It is a route specification, not a live trail-condition report: confirm markings, weather and access before leaving. The same regional guide lists Aspet at 6 kilometres, Saint-Gaudens at 9.9 kilometres and Salies-du-Salat at 11.1 kilometres as nearby destinations; those figures should not be read as drive times. Service-Public lists the mairie at 187 rue de la Mairie, with hours Monday 14:00–18:00, Wednesday 09:00–12:00 and Friday 14:00–17:00. Call ahead, since public-service schedules can change.
