Fislis: an Alsatian border village with a resilient history
Fislis is a small commune in Haut-Rhin, in the historic Sundgau area of Alsace, close to the Swiss border. The village is documented from 1243, when its name appeared in early medieval forms such as Visilis. During the Second World War, like many Alsatian communities near the Maginot Line, Fislis was evacuated in 1939, an event that left a lasting mark on local memory. The village is also known for its long-standing link with Losse in the Landes, born out of wartime displacement and later formalised in a twinning agreement.
Distance: in southern Alsace, near Ferrette and the Swiss frontier.
Highlights: the Church of Saint-Léger, old half-timbered buildings and farms, stone crosses and fountains, and the peaceful landscape of the Sundgau.
