Carlton, Stockton-on-Tees: a village with a medieval layout in County Durham

Carlton is a village and civil parish within the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, in the ceremonial county of County Durham. Although it has expanded with modern housing, it still preserves the outline of an older medieval settlement, with the original village arranged along its main street. Local history points to an 11th- or 12th-century reorganisation of the estate, and the village remained agricultural for much of its history before becoming a desirable residential community near Teesside.
