Foggathorpe: a small Yorkshire village with Norse roots

Foggathorpe is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, on the A163 road between Selby and Market Weighton. Its name is of Old Norse origin and is understood to derive from a personal name combined with the word thorp, meaning a secondary settlement. Historically it was linked to the parish of Bubwith, and in the 19th century local directories recorded its agricultural character, its chapel and school, and later its railway station on the Selby to Market Weighton line.
Population: 313 inhabitants (2011 census, civil parish).
Distance: about 9 miles east of Selby and 8 miles west of Market Weighton.
Highlights: the rural setting of the East Riding, the historic village core, the memory of the former railway station, and nearby Foggathorpe House, a listed building.
