Blois: royal castle and terraced town on the Loire
Blois occupies a hillside on the right bank of the Loire. The castle, the cathedral and the districts connected by stairs give the city a vertical organization. A royal residence during the Renaissance, it also constitutes a gateway to the Loire Valley without being limited to the surrounding excursions.
History and identity
The royal castle brings together medieval, Gothic, Renaissance and classical wings around a courtyard. Louis XII and François I carried out important work there. The Estates General of 1588 and the assassination of the Duke of Guise also marked major political episodes.
What to see
The visit to the castle allows you to compare facades, apartments and the Museum of Fine Arts. The House of Magic faces it on the square. Further down, the old streets descend towards the Jacques-Gabriel bridge; higher up, Saint-Louis Cathedral and the Bishop’s Gardens offer views of the river.
Understanding the place
Stairs and slopes connect the different levels, although some routes are more accessible. The castle night show is seasonal and separate from the interior tour. Neighboring castles require car, bike or organized tour. You should plan a real half-day for Blois before leaving the city.
