Amalfi: maritime republic between the valley and the Mediterranean
Amalfi occupies the mouth of a narrow valley on the Campania coast. Houses, stairs, cathedral and ancient production plants are crowded between the mountains and the sea. The city gave its name to the Amalfi Coast, a cultural landscape recognized by UNESCO.
History and identity
Between the 9th and 11th centuries Amalfi was an important Mediterranean maritime center. The tradition of the Amalfi tables recalls nautical rules used for centuries. The cathedral of Sant'Andrea brings together the basilica, crypt, bell tower and cloister of Paradise through different architectural phases.
What to see
Piazza Duomo opens the path towards the religious complex. The Paper Museum interprets mills and production in a valley rich in water. The Vagliendola district and the arsenal are reminiscent of urban life and navigation. Trails towards the Ferriere Valley are excursions subject to conditions.

Buses, ferries and coastal roads suffer from congestion and depend on the weather and season. The center has stairs and little space. Before leaving, check connections, entrances and paths; arriving early or staying overnight takes the pressure off a quick visit.
