Altea: The Dome of the Mediterranean
Altea, in the province of Alicante, is considered one of the most beautiful towns on the Costa Blanca. Its ancient name comes either from the Greek "Althaia" (I heal) or from the Arabic "attalaya" (watchtower). Its old town, with whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets, is crowned by the Church of Our Lady of Consolation with its iconic blue-tiled dome. It served as a strategic refuge against Barbary pirates in the 16th century.
