Valldemossa: heritage and landscape in the Serra de Tramuntana
Valldemossa occupies an elevated valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, in Mallorca. The stone houses, steep streets and agricultural terraces are part of a cultural landscape shaped over centuries. History and identity
The Charterhouse of Valldemossa was installed in an old royal palace and was occupied by Carthusian monks from the end of the 14th century until the confiscation of the 19th century. Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838-1839 there, an episode documented by objects, texts and collections with different institutional histories. Saint Catherine Thomàs, born in the town, also has a central presence in local devotion.
