Lastres: a fishing village on the eastern coast of Asturias
Lastres, officially Llastres, belongs to the Asturian council of Colunga. The town is terraced over a cove and shares a parish with Luces. Its historical growth was closely related to fishing and the limitations of a port exposed to waves.
History and identity
In Roman times there was a port linked to the exit of minerals and in the 10th century a written reference to the place already appears. Whale, sardine, sea bream and bonito fishing has been documented since the 16th century, as well as pickling factories and Atlantic trade. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was consolidated as a small fishing port.
What to see
The port and the sloping streets allow us to understand the adaptation to the relief. Tourist and gastronomic activity was incorporated especially during the second half of the 20th century. Its use as an audiovisual setting increased its recent fame, but the town continues to be a fishing and residential community.
