Servigliano through memory: the camp, a virtual tour and one refugee’s story

Three Casa della Memoria videos approach the former camp through its institutional history, a virtual tour and Ileana Sviben’s postwar testimony.

Published on 9 October 2021, this 1-hour-46-minute recording marks twenty years of Casa della Memoria’s work on the Servigliano camp. Its title and the association’s media page place it within the institution’s effort to preserve and explain the site’s history. It is the broadest and longest of the three selections: a historical and commemorative presentation rather than a guide to present-day visitor access. Viewers interested in how local memory work developed can start here, then use the shorter virtual tour to see the camp space itself. The recording does not confirm current opening hours.

Riccardo Mecozzi presents this 25-minute-49-second virtual tour of CPG 59, published on 14 October 2021. The video description says the project can be navigated on mobile devices and was funded through a project created by Cooperativa Opera and Marchingegno. That makes it a spatial companion to the longer institutional history: it helps viewers picture the former camp without pretending to be a live view of the park today. Its images date from 2021, so they cannot establish current site conditions, accessibility or opening arrangements. Contact Casa della Memoria before planning an in-person visit.

In this 53-minute-43-second conversation, published on 26 September 2022, Ileana Sviben recalls being a refugee from Fiume who lived at Servigliano’s postwar refugee centre with her mother and brothers from 1948 to 1950, before moving to the centre at Civitavecchia. The association’s description says she returned to Servigliano after more than seventy years and spoke with its scientific director. This testimony gives a family-scale perspective on the postwar chapter, distinct from a general history of the camp or a virtual walk around it. It is a recorded memory, not a substitute for the archive or a current visitor notice.
