Oberthal in three videos: the Rötelsteinpfad and Roman Wareswald

A trail film followed by two independent archaeological videos on a Roman temple and a ring hoard at Wareswald.

Herrenwalder’s 2016 film is explicitly about the Rötelsteinpfad near Oberthal. It gives viewers a dated impression of the walking landscape and relates to the route’s woodlands and valleys, rather than serving as a current trail map. This distinction matters: local reporting in 2026 described plans to reroute a section because weakened beeches could drop branches. Use the film for atmosphere and the municipality’s latest notices and waymarks for present-day access.

Kennesaw State Research’s short film looks at archaeological work around a Roman temple at Wareswald. The university’s project account places student pilot excavations there in 2018 and 2019 and identifies the temple area as dedicated to Mars. Wareswald lies across the present territories of Oberthal, Tholey and Marpingen, not in Oberthal’s village centre. The video is a compact introduction to the site’s research, rather than a general town tour; check the local archaeological visitor information before going.

This short PechaKucha-style talk by Kennesaw State Research focuses on the group of Roman finger-rings found at Wareswald in 2018. Archaeologist Philip Kiernan and co-author Klaus-Peter Henz interpret the 24 bronze rings as likely stock belonging to a local craftsperson, an unusually tangible glimpse of provincial fashion and small-scale trade. The film is a research presentation, not footage of a museum display or a walking visit. Its subject complements the temple video while concentrating on a different find.
