Siikalatva’s wooden churches: Kestilä, Piippola and Rantsila

Three introductions from the Siikalatva parish present the churches of Kestilä, Piippola and Rantsila, each with its own age, architecture and place in the village landscape.

The parish’s introduction to Kestilä church accompanies a building whose construction began in 1854 and whose consecration followed in 1856. The municipal parish page credits self-taught church builder Mikko Karjalahti with leading the work. This clip is one stop in a wider comparison of the churches of the five former parishes that make up Siikalatva Parish; confirm access and service times with the parish before visiting.

Piippola church is the oldest of the three buildings represented here: it was completed in 1769 and consecrated on New Year’s Day 1770. Its bell tower contains a small church museum, according to the parish. This official introduction gives visitors a starting point for the village’s religious heritage, though it should not be taken as a current notice of opening hours or events.

The Rantsila church introduction completes this selection with a timber church designed by Simon Jylkkä-Silven and completed in 1785. The parish highlights Mikael Toppelius’s paintings inside. Rantsila’s old main street nearby adds a broader architectural setting, but the film is specifically about the church; check parish information for access, worship schedules and any seasonal arrangements.
