Vaxholm: harbour, fortress and streets of the Stockholm archipelago
A recent walk covers Vaxholm harbour, the fortress, waterfront views and traditional houses.
This June 2026 walk introduces Vaxholm through four elements named by the creator: the harbour, the fortress, waterfront views and traditional houses. That combination explains why the town is more than a day-trip backdrop. The harbour connects the island community to Stockholm and the wider archipelago, while the fortress recalls the strategic role of the channel approaches. Older homes sit beside cafés, shops and working ferry connections.
Use the video to get a sense of the centre before deciding whether to add a boat trip or a longer walk. Vaxholm's public transport includes both buses and ferries, and departures vary by season and route. The fortress is on a separate island, so check boat access and opening information rather than assuming it is part of the same stroll. If you have more time, the municipal nature areas on Bogesund offer a different landscape from the harbour streets.
