Rautjärvi: Hiitolanjoki restored and Miettilä remembered

Three distinct films introduce the newly opened Hiitolanjoki, its earlier river landscape, and the restored military-history centre at Miettilä.

Rautjärvi Municipality’s seven-minute opening film follows the 2024 public opening of Hiitolanjoki as a place people could visit after restoration work. It brings the river, old power sites and the idea of a route opened again into one visual introduction. It is useful before a visit, but records the opening-period event. Use current municipal information for paths, parking, services and seasonal notices rather than treating the film as a guide to today’s arrangements.

This short 2019 film from the South Karelia recreation foundation offers an earlier look at Hiitolanjoki. Its date matters: it predates removal of the Kangaskoski, Lahnasenkoski and Ritakoski barriers between 2021 and 2023. Viewed alongside the newer open-river film, it helps explain why restoration changed fish passage and the way visitors encounter the rapids. It is an archival impression, not a guide to the river’s present course or facilities.

Rautjärvi Municipality’s 2023 film records renovation phases at Miettilä Kasarminkangas military-history centre. It points to another side of the municipality: preserved barracks buildings, reused civic spaces and work to prepare a centre for local military and social history. The film previews the site’s transformation but cannot establish which exhibitions are open now. Museum access is seasonal, so confirm current hours before travelling.
