This first talk in the municipal lecture series introduces the Kuusela finds, the burial discovered near Vanha-Rantala in 1928 and excavated in 1929. The museum interprets the grave goods as belonging to a wealthy woman buried around AD 1000. That is a dated archaeological interpretation, not evidence that Pertunmaa as a settlement was founded then. The series was presented by University of Helsinki researcher Joonas Ahola; viewers can use this opening lecture to place the physical find before considering broader explanations.

The second title, “Source of Wealth,” turns from the grave goods toward the question of how wealth reached this landscape. The museum presents a fur-trading station as one possible explanation for the burial, not a confirmed fact. This lecture is useful precisely because it invites viewers to examine an interpretation instead of repeating it as certainty. Read alongside the museum’s account of the excavation, it offers context for why an apparently remote district could be connected to wider exchange around the turn of the first millennium.

The final lecture’s title brings together thunder, farming and a burial mound. It belongs to the same three-part research presentation about Pertunmaa’s Viking Age and is best treated as an invitation to consider how environment, livelihood and archaeological evidence may be discussed together. The title alone does not establish a specific conclusion, and the grave cannot prove every idea associated with it. For visitors, the talk adds depth to the modest archaeology display and memorial at Vanha-Rantala, where the distinction between evidence and hypothesis remains central.
