Annecy on foot and by boat: canals, old town and lake
Three films follow Annecy's old-town canals, an extended boat ride on the lake and an evening walk.
Annecy is often described through a single image of a canal, yet the town makes more sense as a sequence of small crossings and open water. Start with the daytime walk through the old streets. Its pace lets you notice the bridges, arcades and waterside façades around the Thiou rather than moving straight to the next landmark. The Palais de l'Île, set in the channel, is a useful point of orientation as the route turns through the centre.
The lake film changes the frame completely. From a boat, the compact old town gives way to a broad shoreline backed by mountains. This is a separate experience from walking the canals: it shows why a visit can combine a historic centre with time beside or on the water. Weather and seasonal services affect boat trips, so check the operator's current timetable before building a day around one.
Return to the evening walk for a third mood. Familiar streets and canals feel different as the light falls and café terraces take over the public spaces. Watching both walks helps you decide where to spend unhurried time, while the lake film puts the town in its wider landscape. The three views together make Annecy more than a postcard of the Palais de l'Île.
