Raseborg in three films: coastal ecology, Ekenäs on the map and the medieval castle

Three distinct views of Raseborg: the Baltic coast, Ekenäs through historic maps and the castle ruins at Snappertuna.

Raseborg’s municipal film looks beyond the postcard coast to the brackish-water ecosystems along the southern Finnish shore. It introduces the nearshore habitats and considers how human actions affect them, giving a visitor a more grounded way to read the archipelago than scenery alone. The film is environmental context rather than a live report: it does not tell you whether a particular beach, landing place or boat route is open today. Pair it with current municipal or national-park notices when planning time by the water.

Ekenässällskapet’s film uses maps to tell the story of Ekenäs as a place that has changed over time. Its visual comparison of historic maps with the contemporary town makes the old street plan and harbour easier to understand as parts of a living settlement, not a preserved stage set. The project was made with the Västra Nyland Museum, and the town’s own notice links the film to an exhibition drawn from its collections. This is the most useful of the three for visitors who want to orient themselves before walking through Gamla stan; it is a cultural-history film, not a current street map or route planner.

This older Mobiguide introduces Raseborg Castle through short sections on the fortress’s history, its people and everyday life, and the ruin then and now. That structure suits a first visit: it helps place the great hall, towers and passages within the role the castle played in western Uusimaa. Its age is also a reason to treat it as interpretation rather than current visitor information. For opening times, access, guided visits and events, consult the castle’s present-day visitor page before travelling to Snappertuna.
