Cetona on video: archaeological research, Belverde and prehistoric ritual

Three museum-channel videos approach Cetona through Umberto Calzoni’s research, the Belverde park and prehistoric cults in the Val di Chiana and on Monte Cetona.

The Civic Museum of Cetona presents this documentary by Chiara De Marco on Umberto Calzoni’s archaeological work in the area. It is the most historically focused of the three selections, connecting the town’s modern research history with the material evidence preserved in the museum. The museum itself documents Neanderthal occupation in the Middle Palaeolithic and a substantial Bronze Age presence at Belverde; the film is best used as an introduction to how that record was investigated, rather than as a substitute for the museum’s interpretation of individual finds. Its date is 9 September 2021.

This short film from the Civic Museum Cetona channel is titled “The Belverde Park.” Its value in the set is visual and introductory: it directs attention from Cetona’s historic streets to the archaeological-natural area where caves, rock shelters and open-air settlement remains are part of one landscape. The museum identifies several accessible cavities and reconstructed teaching environments at the Archeodrome, but the title alone does not establish which specific features appear in the film. Visitors should use the museum’s current access and guided-tour information to plan a visit. Published 9 April 2020.

The museum-channel title identifies this video as a presentation of prehistoric cults in the Val di Chiana and on Monte Cetona. It is a useful companion for viewers interested in the ritual dimension of archaeological interpretation, especially because Belverde’s caves include places used for funerary or cult purposes according to the museum. The film should be read as an educational interpretation, not proof of a single belief system or a complete account of prehistoric life. The museum’s exhibits and site information provide the factual framework. Published 12 April 2020.
