Vescemont is a small commune in the Territoire de Belfort, on the wooded foothills of the southern Vosges. The Rosemontoise runs through its valley; above it, the intercommunal account names Mont Jean at 781 metres and Blanc Murger at 861 metres, with streams coming down their slopes. INSEE counted 717 people across the whole commune in its 2023 reference population, published on 27 August 2026. That figure describes the administrative commune, not only the line of houses along the road. The scale and setting make Vescemont feel like a lived-in mountain-edge community rather than a resort: watercourses, forest paths and neighbouring villages matter as much as a central landmark.

History that needs careful wording

The Community of Communes says an ancient route, identified on its page as Roman, followed the Rosemontoise valley toward Alsace. It also suggests a castle may once have stood on a rocky spur closing the valley, in a defensive position. The page does not cite an excavation or a dated archival record for these claims, so they are best read as the intercommunal historical account, not as independently established proof of a Roman road or a precisely dated fortress. Nearby, the ruins known as Château du Rosemont are associated with Riervescemont; they belong to the wider landscape of the valley and should not be casually labelled a building inside Vescemont. This distinction leaves room for the area's history without making its uncertain parts sound settled.

Small heritage and a working landscape

The same official local page points visitors to the Pierre écrite, a water-driven saw, a counterweighted well and Maison Morel, whose architecture it describes as innovative. Together these references suggest a landscape shaped by water, practical work and domestic building, as well as by wooded slopes. The page also notes trout fishing and marked forest walks, including the GR5. These are useful leads, not guarantees that every site is open, accessible or equipped for visitors today. Look for current municipal or intercommunal notices before planning a stop, and avoid entering private property or approaching water-powered machinery without clear permission.

Work, services and regional connections

INSEE's 2023 data make the scale of the local economy legible without dressing it up as a larger town centre. It recorded 73 jobs at workplaces in Vescemont and 307 employed residents; 25 of those residents worked within the commune. A separate table counts 40 economically active establishments in its non-agricultural market-producing scope. These measures are snapshots, not a directory of shops or a promise of employment. For everyday administrative contact, the State's directory lists the town hall at 8 Grande-Rue. The broader Giromagny area supplies nearby connections and services, while the valley remains a quiet residential setting. Check current transport, business openings and municipal reception hours directly, because listings and schedules can change.

A nearby mountain walk

The Vosges du Sud hiking authority lists the 13.3-kilometre Grand tour de Riervescemont, also called the Balade du Chantoiseau. Its red-circle route gains 541 metres and is graded long and fairly difficult. The listed points of interest include the Rosemont ruins, the Lamadeleine chapel and the Baerenkopf summit at 1,074 metres. Access is listed from the bridge over the Rosemontoise or Lamadeleine town hall, so treat it as a neighbouring valley outing, not a loop contained entirely in Vescemont. The page recommends proper footwear and season-appropriate clothing. Confirm the current map, markings, weather, water levels and any closures before setting out; do not assume a route is suitable merely because it is marked.
