Trento: An Ancient City and the Adige Valley
Trento is the capital of the province of the same name and of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, located in the Adige river valley between Bolzano and Verona. The vast municipality includes the urban centre, valley-bottom suburbs, hilly areas and mountain villages that retain different identities.
History and identity
The position along the Adige valley has made Trento a connection point between the Italian and Alpine areas. Contemporary development has not erased the polycentric structure of the municipality: Gardolo occupies the valley floor to the north, Sardagna stands on a rocky plain at 560 meters and the Bondone villages reach much higher altitudes.
What to see
The landscape is framed by Paganella, Mount Calisio, Marzola, Vigolana and Monte Bondone, also called Alpe di Trento. In the Viote del Bondone basin there is the alpine botanical garden and access to the Tre Cime del Bondone integral nature reserve. The small cable car that connects Sardagna to the valley floor shows another relationship between city and mountain.
