Stresa: lakeside, Borromean Islands and Monte Mottarone
Stresa is a Piedmontese municipality overlooking the western coast of the Borromean Gulf, facing the islands of the same name. Its territory unites the historic core and the lakefront, the islands, various hillside hamlets and the Mottarone mountain area.
History and identity
The name appears for the first time in a deed of sale from 998 in the form Strixsya and goes through subsequent variants in documents before stabilizing in Stresa. The etymology is debated and different derivations have been proposed. In Roman times the territory was crossed by the Via Severiana Augusta, which connected Milan to Lake Maggiore and the Sempione pass.
What to see
The lakeside promenade and the historic center constitute the starting point, while Carciano expands the coastal route. Three of the four Borromean Islands — Madre, Bella and Pescatori — belong to the municipal territory. Higher up, the hilly hamlets, the Alpinia Botanical Garden and the Mottarone show the mountain component of Stresa.
