Siena: districts, Gothic art and urban landscape
Siena develops on hills structured around Piazza del Campo. The historic center, a UNESCO heritage site, preserves a medieval image that can be read in the streets, buildings and doors. The districts are living communities and not simple symbols of the Palio.
History and identity
The Republic of Siena experienced great prosperity between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia express civic power; the cathedral brings together architecture, sculpture and inlaid flooring. The plague of 1348 and the Medici conquest marked profound turning points.
What to see
Piazza del Campo, civic museum and cathedral complex require separate times. Santa Maria della Scala preserves hospital environments and collections. Walking in the districts reveals springs, oratories and steep connections between hills, to be observed while respecting local activities and locations.
Understand the place
The center is pedestrianized but very steep. During the Palio access and rules change and the square does not function as on an ordinary day. Tickets for the cathedral and climbs to the towers may sell out. Car parks and the station are outside the centre.
