Setenil de las Bodegas: architecture under the rock of Guadalporcún
Setenil de las Bodegas was developed in a gorge excavated by the Guadalporcún River. Many homes rest on natural projections: they are not completely carved caves, but rather constructions that close the space under the rock. This bioclimatic solution and the difference in height between neighborhoods define the urban experience.
History and identity
The fortress located in the upper part was part of the border of the Nasrid kingdom and was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1484. The keep, the old medina and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación allow us to understand the subsequent evolution. The name “de las Bodegas” is traditionally related to storage spaces and agricultural production.
What to see
The streets Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra show two different orientations with respect to the channel and the light. Going up towards the Plaza de Andalucía, the castle and the viewpoints reveals the vertical organization that cannot be seen from the background. The neighborhoods are still inhabited and the rock overhangs are a real part of houses and businesses.
Understanding the place
The slopes are steep, the sidewalks are narrow and vehicle access is conditioned by the topography. It is preferable to park in the authorized areas and explore the town on foot without blocking doorways.
