At Schladming's Planai stadium, a visitor meets a modern sporting town. A short walk into the old streets leads to a less familiar story: a mining community that was called a city, punished after a rebellion and made a city again centuries later. The mountain landscape has supplied very different livelihoods over time.

A city in a document, not a founding myth

A municipal planning study gives 1180 as the first mention of the settlement and describes medieval silver, lead and copper extraction. An article in the Schladming local-history journal examines a deed dated 27 July 1322. Its wording calls Schladming a Stat, the earliest known documentary use of city for the place. The researcher explicitly cautions that this deed is not a city charter. Treating 1322 as the day a town was founded would turn a documentary milestone into a myth.

Mining gave the small settlement regional weight. The historical account describes a mining court, officials and ore buyers serving the mountain valleys. During the Peasants' and Miners' War of 1525, the settlement was destroyed and lost its city standing. A municipal anniversary account says it then spent roughly four centuries as a market town before city status was restored in 1925. These are political and legal changes, not evidence that residents or mining vanished overnight.

Reading the landscape today

The official town walk links the city museum and a miner's house with the Planai stadium, which hosted finishes at the 1982 and 2013 Alpine Ski World Championships. For the industrial landscape beyond the centre, the tourism office describes a mining walk in Obertal and a bus connection to Hopfriesen. Check tour access and mountain conditions; tunnels and paths require more preparation than a town stroll.

Three visits, three ways of understanding Schladming

Start on the official town walk at Rathausplatz. Its route passes remains of the wall, the former Bruderladehaus that served miners and now houses the museum, the surviving Salzburger Tor, and the churches before reaching Hauptplatz. These are not interchangeable photo stops: the miners' welfare house speaks to how dangerous work was organised, while the gate and wall recall a town whose legal standing once mattered. The route also reaches the edge of Talbachklamm, where the water has an immediate presence even before a longer hike. The town walk is described as accessible by local bus from the station; the tourist office also lists a city bus within Schladming.

For a very different day, the Planai operator offers a cable-car ascent, panoramic walking, a bike park and family play areas in summer, while winter brings downhill skiing. Lift operations and weather vary, so this is a choice to plan, not an automatic addition to every itinerary. South-east of town, the Untertal page describes the staged Wilde Wasser trail through Talbachklamm, moorland and the Riesach waterfalls. Summer bus 974 serves several access points, allowing a shorter section instead of a full mountain day. The exposed Höll alpine path is a separate, demanding option; the operator says it is unsuitable for young children and dogs. Accommodation, restaurants, mountain huts and local transport make Schladming a base for these contrasting outings, but confirm each provider's season and availability.

Statistics Austria counted 6,609 people in the municipality on 31 October 2025, which includes more than the compact old centre. Its 2021 workplace census counted 4,923 workers at local workplaces: 4,094 in services, 717 in industry and construction, and 112 in the primary sector. Those older figures show that the resort economy includes jobs beyond ski slopes. The official tourism report records more than 900,000 overnight stays in the municipality in summer 2025, a measure of the scale of present-day tourism, not resident population.

From Salzburg, travel by train via Bischofshofen; from Graz, use the rail corridor via Bruck an der Mur and Stainach-Irdning. The ÖBB route 250 timetable lists Schladming between Bischofshofen and Stainach-Irdning and shows onward connections to both cities. Check the exact train and transfer before departure, then allow time to see the town before heading for Planai or Obertal.
