Noto: Baroque capital between the Iblei Mountains and the Gulf of Noto
Noto is a municipality of the free consortium of Syracuse, in south-eastern Sicily, and is the largest on the island. The inhabited center rises at 152 meters on the southern slopes of the Iblean Mountains and dominates the plain that descends towards the Ionian Sea.
History and identity
Defined the capital of the Baroque, Noto preserves a historic center which since 2002 has been part of the UNESCO site of the late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto. The vast territory connects the limestone reliefs of the Iblei, engraved by valleys and quarries, to the alluvial plains of Tellaro and San Paolo and finally to the Ionian coast.
What to see
The baroque center is the starting point, while the territory allows us to interpret very different landscapes. On the Gulf of Noto, beaches, dunes, limestone cliffs, wetlands and promontories alternate. The Vendicari Faunal Oasis Nature Reserve is one of the main resting places for migratory avifauna in the Mediterranean.
