Jayac is a useful place to slow down between the forest tracks of the Périgord Noir and the larger heritage centres of the Dordogne. Its built-up centre is small, while the commune spreads across a countryside of woods, farms and scattered homes. INSEE counted 191 people in the whole commune in its 2023 reference population; that is a municipal census figure, not a count of the village core. Jayac belongs to the Pays de Fénelon intercommunal area, and its walks make the surrounding landscape part of the visit rather than a backdrop seen only from the road.

A keep with a documented past

The most striking historic landmark is the old donjon. The Ministry of Culture dates its main construction to the twelfth century and records that the fief was burned in 1790. The protected structure is now privately owned; its surviving entrance arch, wall fragments and narrow openings can be appreciated as heritage, but the record does not promise public access inside. Nearby route descriptions also draw attention to Saint-Julien church, the Fontaine du Burg, a former cattle-shoeing frame, a walnut grove, wayside crosses and the Lavoir du Rieux. These are modest features of a working village landscape, best encountered on foot and with respect for private land.

One local story deserves careful wording. The Pays de Fénelon trail page attributes to the Mémoire et Patrimoine du Salignacois association the idea that the Burg spring predates the castle and that the castle gave rise to Jayac. That is a heritage tradition, not a dated archaeological finding, so the two should not be confused.

Choose a loop, then check the track

The tourism office describes Boucle d'en Brousse as an easy countryside loop of about 9 kilometres and roughly three hours, passing wooded slopes, restored farms, fountains and crosses. A separate Boucle des 3 Combes is listed at 5.3 kilometres and about two hours, mainly through forest. Both descriptions offer downloadable GPX or KML files. Another platform gives En Brousse as 9.1 kilometres, a small but real difference; use the current track and on-site markings, and check conditions before setting out. The regional GRP Pays de Fénelon also passes Jayac and includes a short out-and-back variant to the old keep and Cheylard chapel. Road crossings require care, and routes can change with maintenance or weather.

A rural economy and practical base

INSEE counted ten employer establishments at the end of 2024. Six were in commerce, transport and varied services; the other four were spread across agriculture, industry, construction and public services. All were small establishments with fewer than ten employees, a statistical snapshot rather than a complete account of residents' work. The commune's own site lists visitor accommodation including Hôtel A Jayac and La Grange de Joseph, and describes a small educational apiary installed in 2020. The Cern speleology club moved its base to Jayac in 2023, reflecting the wider area's interest in underground landscapes.

The mairie publishes its contact details and reception hours for Monday and Thursday; confirm them before making a special trip. Salignac and Sarlat provide broader visitor services and heritage stops nearby, while Brive is another regional centre. For a relaxed stay, Jayac works best as a walking base: plan a loop, leave room for unhurried village lanes, and verify opening times, accommodation availability and trail conditions before travel.
