Hallstahammar is a Västmanland town where water still explains the map. The Kolbäcksån runs through the settlement, and the nearby Strömsholms canal threads locks, old industrial sites and leafy banks through the broader municipality. Hallstahammar is a working service centre as well as a place to visit: its appeal lies in seeing how iron production, transport, recreation and ordinary town life grew beside one another. Statistics Sweden recorded 16,599 registered residents in Hallstahammar Municipality on 30 June 2026. That is the population of the whole municipality, not a count of the built-up locality alone.
Forged beside the river
The documented industrial story reaches back to the water-powered works at Trångfors, just north of the centre. Municipal heritage material dates the forge there to 1628; a copper hammer followed in the 1630s, and mills and metalworking sites used the river's drops for power. The story has a clear documentary base, so this profile does not need a foundation legend to explain the town's origins. Instead, it follows the works, watercourse and later canal through the evidence recorded by the municipality.
Strömsholms canal was completed in 1795 to move iron and other goods from the Bergslagen districts toward Lake Mälaren. Its local landscape includes the substantial lock works at Hallstahammar, the Sörkvarn triple lock, the former canal administration area at Skantzen and the industrial remains at Trångfors. When commercial freight by canal faded, the waterway took on a new role for leisure boats and visitors. The canal runs about 110 kilometres through 26 locks overall; the complete route is a regional journey, not a single town walk.
Skantzen, parks and a living economy
Start around Åsby–Skantzen, where the hand-dug Skantzsjön, canal buildings and towpath make a gentle outing close to the centre. Skantzen once handled the canal's administration; its old office and tool museum help explain how the waterway was managed, and a working lock model demonstrates the mechanism without needing to catch a boat in transit. Nearby paths, picnic places, swimming, camping, cafés and shops can turn a short stop into a longer visit, although opening seasons differ.
Town industry is not only heritage behind glass. Kanthal develops heating materials and systems, while Bulten makes fastening products for vehicle manufacturers. Public administration, care, education, business services and commerce also support the local economy. This mix gives the town a practical character: factory employment and municipal services coexist with neighbourhood paths and a modest visitor scene. Just beyond the centre, Strömsholm adds a different strand to the municipal identity through its palace setting, riding school and equestrian expertise.
Walking beside water
For a short nature break, the municipality recommends easy-to-reach paths near Hallstahammar and Kolbäck, along with the 3.5-kilometre Valstaspåret in the Valstasjön reserve. Sörkvarnsforsen preserves one of the last undeveloped rapid sections of Kolbäcksån, with wooded riverbanks and small islands. Longer walkers can join the 270-kilometre Bruksleden from Motionscentrum at Duvhällarna; choose a suitable stage and check maps, surfaces, transport and protected-area rules in advance.
There is an important access detail for canal visitors. In a notice dated December 2025, the municipality reported barriers near the Sörkvarn triple lock after an inspection found a risk of ground collapse beside the lock chamber. That dated notice does not prove what is open in autumn 2026, so check the canal operator's latest status before approaching the lock banks or booking a boat trip. The canal's 2026 visitor information also describes convoy traffic rather than the usual lock timetable; confirm dates and booking details with the operator.
Arriving and exploring further
Hallstahammar connects to Västerås by regional train and by local bus. Strömsholm, Kolbäck and Borgåsund are further stops in the same municipal landscape, so public transport schedules or a car help link them into a day out. Rail work and replacement buses can change the journey; verify departures, lock access, guided tours, museum openings and seasonal services before setting a date. Walking the centre-to-canal area is the simplest way to read the town's relationship with water; the wider industrial and riding heritage rewards a little more planning.
