Genoa is the capital of Liguria and the most populous municipality in the region, overlooking the center of the gulf of the same name on the Ligurian Sea. For centuries the capital of the Republic of Genoa, one of the main maritime republics, the city played a leading role in Mediterranean and European trade and became a maritime and financial power. With industrialization it entered the industrial triangle with Milan and Turin. In 2004 it was European Capital of Culture.
